While I was in Atlanta, I shot a pilot for a cooking show with former NBA player Charles Oakley. The women there were (for lack of a better word) smitten with seeing a man in the kitchen cooking, especially a big dude like Oak. They asked if he learned from helping out his mother in the kitchen, he told them that he learned out of necessity. If you’re hungry (and broke), you better cook especially if you know what you have a taste for. The concept of the New Millennium Man was mentioned, although the other three men present (myself included) stick to the bare minimum of cooking basics. The meal was amazing; he even made appetizers to hold us over … mini-turkey burgers with sautéed mushrooms! During the rest of my stay in Atlanta, I saw several New Millennium Men at work and realized that I need to join their ranks. I’m a baker by training (my grandmother is a baking wiz … and I took classes at this thing called Saturday School when I was a lil kid), so this Christmas I’ll be making my most experimental contribution – homemade cheesecake, because I know I want that for dessert.

Janelle Monae. It was my first time seeing her sing live. The faces on these guys say enough. This was just a sound check ... words are not enough.

Well, somebody from ATL is selling a few pairs of the Nike LeBron IV NYC Limited Edition sneaker. There were only 250 of these sneakers made and he's asking $1000 for them. Who in Atlanta has several pairs of these sneakers? If I had to guess, it'd have to be somebody from Coca Cola ... one of his parent endorsement companies (PowerAde) or Dallas Austin. These kicks came out last year and I got a pair ... maybe I should wait til they're worth 10k and put my joints on ebay too.

Is the measure of love most evident through dramatic action? I'm beginning to believe that for most women the answer is an absolute "yes", whether it's consciously recognized or not. In an era of reality-TV style love, declarations must be a spectacle ... a pseudo-event. Shouldn't the event in a proposal be the proposal itself?

Anyway, I got this from one of my cousins:

Why is Sandy Sissel slated to shoot Tyler Perry's next film "Meet the Browns"? Who is Sandy Sissel?!? She is a terrific Director of Photography, one of the first women to get into the D.P. union. I wonder if she likes his movies? I'm being sarcastic!!!!! She hates his movies! She spent seven years of her life shooting Mother Theresa ... that's not important. What I'm trying to say is that she's doing it for a check.

If Tyler Perry has a perception of power, I'm sorry this power, as a Black director who has his Black studio in the Black Mecca with all these same Black actors making these horrible Black psuedo-christian films with Cicely Tyson as the Grandmother is sooooooo down for Black people, he should be able to find some Black technical talent. I wonder if he knows she's doing it for a check? Tyler Perry hates Black people. Black people need checks too. We need technical faces of color on the set. Kasi Lemmons, Antwon Fuqua, Gina Prince-Bythewood (and her husband), John Singleton, the Hughes Brothers [independently and separately ... where are you? get back together?].... all the commercially successful Black directors who do not hire Black DPs ... hire black DPs ... demand it! Why didn't I mention Spike on this list? Because he tends to do the right thing by hiring Colored DP's.
